Give Strikes A Fair Shake

Reality and perception are two different things........great case in point is the hate crime that occurred in the parking lot of the Strikes bowling alley in Elk Grove.......some television stations have reported that the victim was beaten as he left Strikes........those same news reports indicated there was no security on duty at Strikes that night and that was another factor in the attack.......and one station was quick to say Strikes caters to the "criminal element".....the sad thing is those three things are probably the perception for many if not most of the residents of Elk Grove and there's a huge difference between perception and reality.........the reality is the victim in this case wasn't attacked while exiting the bowling alley----it happened at the far end of the parking lot a good distance from the entrance to strikes.......as for security-----the owner of Jim Falls has gone to great lengths to increase security at Strikes----in fact it was doubled up the n

Sacramento D.A.: Staff cuts mean fewer prosecutions

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA - Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced Wednesday how her reduced budget will impact the prosecution of crimes and staff.

Scully said due to receiving $6.9 million less for 2011-2012, her office will only have the resources to prosecute violent crimes and threats of physical injury. She said there won't be resources to investigate and try major fraud, white collar fraud and political corruption; misdemeanor drug offenses and thefts under $950.

In addition, the district attorney's office will cease investigating officer-involved shootings and deaths in custody.

Scully is eliminating the major narcotics, vehicle theft and misdemeanor trial units. Staffing will be cut in the homicide, gangs and hate crimes, domestic violence and career criminal units. The D.A. says as of Aug. 1, there will be 64 fewer staff, including 31 prosecutors.

Vallejo teacher pleads not guilty to rape of disabled aide

VALLEJO, CA (AP) -- A Vallejo special education teacher has pleaded not guilty to a charge of raping a developmentally disabled teachers' aide.

Solano County prosecutors say Jerry Johnson, 56, of Elk Grove, entered the plea during his arraignment on Tuesday. Deputy District Attorney Andrew Ganz says the charge against Johnson comes with an enhancement of great bodily injury because the girl is pregnant.

Johnson is accused of attacking the 18-year-old during school hours at the end of February at Loma Vista Elementary School, where he taught. Her parents reported the alleged rape in June.

Authorities say the girl, who has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old, was assisting Johnson with other developmentally disabled students.

Johnson has been put on paid administrative leave from the school. School officials say the parents of students in the district are being notified of his arrest.
