SACRAMENTO, CA - Two men are wanted for the murder of Maliek McClendon, 17.
The teenager was shot to death Sunday night while taking a walk with his 20-year-old girlfriend near her apartment in North Sacramento.
Detectives say the couple was near the intersection of Wright Street near Carlsbad Avenue when two men walked up to them just before 11 p.m. The men robbed the couple then shot McClendon in the upper torso. He died about an hour later at a nearby hospital.
"At first, I was just struggling with the fact that my son is gone," McClendon's mother Blossie Jacobs said after returning to her home in Elk Grove after identifying her son's body. "But now, I know he's gone."
"I think because of the circumstance, it's very traumatic," Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. R.L. Davis said. "It was dark. They (the victims) weren't able to give a good description. And, unfortunately, there weren't many people around there when it occurred."
Jacobs said Maliek was known as the protector of his family, living with his mother at her home in Elk Grove. She said he was just starting to turn his life around by going back to school this week to start his junior year. He was looking forward to graduating and becoming an adult.
"My son died for nothing. He died for nothing. I mean nothing. And it's painful because we were so close," Jacobs said.
The teenager's girlfriend was not injured and could only describe the attackers as being two male adults wearing all dark clothing and dark hoodies.
