Police: Man leads cops on high-speed chase after stealing homeowner's garbage | Crime

ELK GROVE, Calif. - A man allegedly caught stealing trash from a person's garbage can, led Elk Grove police officers on a high-speed chase along Highway 99 Friday morning.
According to officers on scene, the homeowner saw the man digging through the garbage can in his backyard and called police.
Police responded to the area and located the suspected thief by the description of his car provided by the homeowner.
Officers attempted to stop the man, but he fled, leading police on a five-minute chase northbound on Hwy. 99 from Elk Grove Blvd. at speeds reaching 100 mph, said police.
The driver eventually pulled over and surrendered without incident on the side of the highway just south of Sheldon Rd., police said.
Officers searched the man's vehicle and removed numerous bags of recyclables from the car, police said.
The man was arrested and faces prowling and felony evading charges.
Police did not say if the garbage was returned to its rightful owner.
