Diversity in Elk Grove
Life

When we came to Elk Grove back in 1989 it wasn't even a city but rather a small suburb of Sacramento with maybe 30,000 people.......I don't recall the racial breakdown back then but the perception was that the community was primarily made up of caucasions and for the most part very conservative.........the political bent of Elk Grove still skews toward the right but there is  much more balance today compared with 20 years ago.......however the racial breakdown now is far more diverse than it was back in 1989 and I like that.......in the 12 homes immediately surrounding mine we have six caucasian families---two african american families----two mexican families-----and two asian families......our three sons have grown up in a world where they're color blind---between our neighborhood and the schools they've attended it's been a rainbow world......to be honest-----I know many people who used to live in Elk Grove but have since moved to El Dorado Hills or Folsom for reasons that made me doubtful.......I've heard things like we want to get away from the crime, we want better schools for our kids, we don't like the direction Elk Grove is headed-----all codes perhaps for some real meaning.........Personally I like the diversity we have in Elk Grove and I like what it means for our boys----they've grown up in a world where they don't even pay attention to the color of ones skin----I hope that is true for generations to come.
