Expert to help decide if boy accused of mom's beating is competent
News

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A California judge has appointed a psychologist to help decide if an 11-year-old Elk Grove boy is competent to stand trial for severely beating his disabled mother with an extension cord.

The boy, who was his mother's primary caregiver, prepared meals and did laundry in the home they shared.

He is facing felony charges of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon for attacking 51-year-old woman last month.

She was hospitalized and died days later of a preexisting condition not related to the beating.

The Sacramento Bee says the examination will determine if the boy understands the seriousness of the charges and is mature enough to help his lawyer defend him.

The boy spent a week in Sacramento County Juvenile Hall before he was released to his father.
