ELK GROVE, Calif. - A 12-year-old boy was killed when he attempted to cross the street near an Elk Grove shopping center Sunday.

Edward Hill was a 7th grader at Joseph Kerr Middle School. He was a wrestler and loved singing in his church choir. He'd just left church on Sunday when his life was cut short. Hill was crossing the street with another boy at the busy intersection of Bond Road and Elk Crest Drive.

Hill, who was believed to be riding or walking his bicycle, was struck by a 5th wheel trailer that was being towed by a truck. He was transported to UC Davis Medical Center where he later died; the other boy was not hurt, police said.

By the time Barron Hill made it to the hospital, his son had already been pronounced dead. As Hill was saying a final goodbye, he felt the two shared a special spiritual moment.

"As soon as I said, "Edward, I am not mad, I love you and I am so proud of you,' I felt him go away," Barron Hill said. "It was all he needed to hear and that is all your kids need to hear."

Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene of the accident and alcohol or drugs don't appear to be a factor in the accident. Police said it doesn't appear the driver was negligent, but it was simply a tragic accident.

Hill and his fiancé are now left grappling with the loss. They are getting married next month.

"He was supposed to be his best man for our wedding," Melinda Jacinto said. "The day before we went to a tuxedo fitting and today; I had to cancel it."

"Your children know that you love them," Baron Hill said. "You tell them every day. But take the time to let them know you are proud, too."

Funeral services for Edward Hill will take place Sunday, Nov. 25. It will be held at 2 p.m. at Elk Grove United Methodist Church located at 8986 Elk Grove Blvd.
