Public Meeting Planned to Discuss Tree Removals on Elk Grove Levees

Public Meeting Planned to Discuss Tree Removals on Elk Grove Levees

Elk Grove, CA – The City of Elk Grove will host a public meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6 to inform the community about tree, shrub and other vegetation removals on the levees near Stonelake Apartment Homes and Nottoli Park in Elk Grove.

The City of Elk Grove has approximately four miles of levees located in an urbanized area within the western part of the City adjacent to Interstate 5.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has determined that a portion of Elk Grove’s levees do not meet federal requirements.  Currently, there are trees, shrubs and plants located within a “vegetation-free zone” that could potentially compromise the structural integrity of the levees and impede flood-fighting and assistance efforts in the event of a natural disaster.

The project has required the closure of portions of Grant Line Road 24 hours a day on the weekends of Oct. 6 and Oct. 13.  Due to lower-than-expected evening temperatures, a third weekend has been added to the construction schedule to complete the project.

Grant Line Road will be closed beginning Saturday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 a.m. and will reopen again by Monday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 a.m.

The joint project between the City of Elk Grove and Sacramento County will resurface the entire width of Grant Line Road between Mosher Road and Elk Grove Blvd., including all approaches at the intersection of Elk Grove Blvd.  The existing pavement has surpassed its life expectancy and has become prone to potholes.
